Five years before joining the Worthy Blades, John Smith had attempted to learn rogue skills from the Xanathar’s Guild in Waterdeep under the name of Draithen Wraithgate. While not interested in thievery for the sake of personal gain, John considered certain skills possessed by rogues to be valuable. He signed on as an apprentice of the guild and began learning the tricks of the trade: opening locks, disabling traps, setting traps, sneaking quietly, donning disguises, how to strike an opponent’s vital organs, and even dabbled a little with the alchemists of the guild. Among his new peers he was considered a prized student and learned quickly, gaining notice among some of the guild leaders. Since burglary, extortion, illegal smuggling, assassination, slavery, and other dark pursuits that the guild engaged in were in his mind detestable, John avoided becoming entangled in these crimes and concentrated on gaining those skills that he considered worthwhile.
His repeated avoidance of the less savory guild duties began to be noticed by his superiors however and he was ordered to earn his keep and payoff his training contract through guild profits. His first major assignment was to contact Dragon Cultists regarding some newly obtained “merchandise” and discover their interest in acquiring it. John not only failed to complete the task, he "lost" the valuable "merchandise" and finally had to fake his own death to avoid being hunted down by not only the guild but the dragon cultists.
On returning to Cormyr, John has posed as an apothecary on occasion and has dabbled in both the arcane and divine. He realized quickly that he was no longer suited to the pursuits of rogues and feared discovery if he brought attention from local thieves guilds.
On first glance, John Smith would be described as remarkably unremarkable. With light brown hair, brown eyes, a light tan, and a relatively plain appearance most people wouldn't give him a second look. He has no distinguishing features, scars, or marks and tends to blend into the surrounding populace in most urban settings.
John is a jack of all trades with a thirst for learning in all fields of study. He has a broad depth of knowledge and has a remarkable ability to remember obscure facts and often unimportant details. He also has an interest in magic and is seeking to replicate its power through various alchemical means. Alchemy has been a consistent study of his and he has occasionally dabbled in the trade to earn a living, selling elixers and potions of non-magical ingredients for herbal remedies or mild effects.
John is trained in a variety of weapons and is not specialized in any one weapon. Currently, he carries a magical longsword that strikes deep against scaly foes. John wears no armor but carries a shield when not needing a free hand for his crossbow.
John began as a follower of Tymora, the Goddess of Good Fortune but has always attended other temples with little hesitation. Tymora's hands-on approach to her worshippers intrigued John, who had a particular interest in being blessed with good luck. John also worships Lathander and has sought to develop his faith in Lathander as well. This faith has resulted in the gift of healing and in turning the undead through the power of Lathander. The High Priest of Lathander at Eveningstar granted John a new name, Lorethane, as a symbol of his newly acquired faith. In addition to a new name, as a priest of Lathander, John disguises his appearance. He appear several inches taller, slightly thinner, with blond hair, paler skin, and a scar on his left cheek.
